Poster Presentation at ECRO 2026 Conference

Takasago gave a poster presentation at the European Chemoreception Research Organization (ECRO) 2026 Conference, held from September 15 to 18, 2026, at Sorbonne University in Paris.

Effects of a fragrance intervention on nocturnal arousal: a large-scale randomized controlled trial
Large-scale sleep studies in the general population are difficult to conduct because of challenges in participant recruitment and in standardizing monitoring conditions. To address this, we conducted a randomized controlled trial involving more than 2,300 guests staying in capsule hotels. Participants were randomly assigned to spend one night with either a sleep-promoting fragrance or an odorless control diffused in their sleeping pod, and their sleep was measured objectively using sensors built into the pods. Compared with the control group, the fragrance group had a significantly lower nocturnal wake ratio and a significantly lower average heart rate during sleep. These findings suggest that fragrance exposure during sleep may offer a simple, non-pharmacological way to support sleep quality in real-world settings.
