How can we control unpleasant body malodor effectively? Development of novel fragrances using the olfactory receptor technology. (won the highest poster award)

The unpleasant body malodors are becoming a social problem. We developed novel fragrances to control body malodor using olfactory receptor technology. First, we discovered that a receptor responds to key components of both aging and axillary malodors. Second, we screened inhibitors of an olfactory receptor, so-called antagonists, from fragrance materials. Finally, we created fragrances that contain the antagonists. The fragrances showed excellent odor controlling effect on the malodors. By applying this technology, we will continue to develop new and superior malodor control fragrances.

Reconstituting natural scents of the Japanese woods focusing on the character uniqueness and investigating their functions

In the fragranced product market, the natural ingredients are getting more important. To explore new materials, we focused on the unique scents of eight Japanese wood species native or endemic to Japan, such as Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa), Hiba (Thujopsis dolaburata var. hondae) and so on. We have developed a new analytical method to capture the fresh woody fragrances, then utilized both GC/MS and GC-olfactometry (GC/O) to determine the key characters contributing to the unique odor, which finally lead to the reconstitution of natural woody scent. Furthermore, we confirmed our reconstituted fragrances have a sedative effect by contingent negative variation (CNV) measurement.
