TAKASAGO has published a paper entitled "Characteristic Odor of the Japanese Liverwort (Leptolejeunea elliptica)" in Journal of Oleo Science.

The liverwort Leptolejeunea elliptica is a genus of liverwort in family Lejeuneaceae, which is very miniature-size stem-leafy liverwort growing on the leaves of Camellia sinensis and Illicium anisatum found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu area in Japan. This liverwort emits the citrusy, minty, floral, and anis-like, very complex odor when supplied water and its remaining scent shows the moldy odor. We analyzed the volatile components of the liverwort and then identified 4-ethylanisole and 4-ethylphenol as the major components. This study was done in collaboration with Prof. Yoshinori Asakawa, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tokushima Bunri University.
