Going global with our state-of-the-art technology
Since its foundation in 1920, Takasago has taken advantage of its proprietary technology to produce a host of aroma chemicals like vanillin and heliotropin.

In 1983, with help of Professor Ryoji Noyori, it became the first company in the world to successfully produce l-menthol industrially by harnessing asymmetric synthesis technology. l-Menthol, the active component of mint and peppermint, is among the most in-demand aroma chemicals in the world.
Since that triumph, the company has capitalized on asymmetric synthesis to create an impressive array of innovative, alluring fragrances and flavors.

Asymmetric synthesis technology makes it possible to selectively synthesize chiral compounds. The aroma chemicals so produced are optically active and for that reason distinguished by their clean, natural scent. They are used in a wide range of applications, including household products, toiletries, and fine fragrances.

Among the items Takasago has developed by means of asymmetric synthesis is a natural ceramide with high optical purity. Compared to conventional synthesized ceramides, this ceramide has superb water retention and barrier functions, and offers excellent skincare and hair-care benefits.

Optically active substances can have a completely different effect on the body, and that makes asymmetric synthesis technology of immense importance to the pharmaceuticals industry as well. Using BINAP catalysts, Takasago develops and produces chiral intermediaries for drugs for AIDS, diabetes, and depression.
