112

  • White Porcelain Covered Container with Lotus Flower Lid (Fujian-style kiln)
Sung dynasty (960-1280) W11cm
Although it is white porcelain, the piece is believed to be in the Fujian style from China from the clay used. The glaze is lustrous and the shape is rare for a covered container. The lid has a small grip on top in the shape of lotus flower buds and leaves. The container was used to hold cosmetic oil, white makeup powder, and lip rouge.

Celadon Covered Container with Birds and Flowers (Esshu kiln)

  • Celadon Covered Container with Birds and Flowers (Esshu kiln), China
Five Dynasties (907-960) to Northern Sung dynasty (960-1279) W14cm
A single parrot with its wings spread is depicted on the lid of the container, around which is a peony pattern. Further to the edge is a scrolling arabesque incised design. The glaze color is considered to be celadon and the patterns are refined, so the container is likely to have been used by a noblewoman to hold makeup items.
